Why We Don't Pierce With Your Own Jewellery
If you've ever shown up to a piercing appointment with a beautiful piece of jewellery you bought online, only to be told it can't go in your fresh piercing, you're not alone. It's one of the most common points of confusion (and sometimes frustration) for clients.
Here's the honest reasoning behind the policy.
It's Not About Upselling
The biggest misconception is that studios refuse outside jewellery just to make you buy from them. In reality, this is an industry-wide safety standard recommended by piercing associations, and most reputable studios follow it for these core reasons, not because it's profitable.
Material Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Fresh piercings are open wounds. For the weeks or months it takes to heal, your body needs jewellery made from implant-grade materials — think ASTM F136 titanium or solid 14k+ gold. Jewellery from general retailers, even if it looks identical, is often:
Plated rather than solid (the plating wears off inside the wound)
Made from mystery alloys with higher nickel content, a common allergen
Not certified or tested for biocompatibility
You can't tell the difference by looking at it or even by price. Only sourcing from a supplier who provides material certification guarantees what's actually going into your body.
Sizing is More Precise Than It Looks
Initial piercing jewellery needs specific gauge, length, and diameter to accommodate swelling and allow proper healing. A stud or ring that looks "about right" can be too tight (cutting off healing tissue as it swells) or too loose (causing migration or irritation). Professional piercers measure your anatomy and select jewellery to match, something that's much harder to guarantee with an item you bring in.
Sterility Can't Be Verified
Everything used in a fresh piercing has to be sterilised in an autoclave and handled with strict sterile technique. Jewellery from a retail package like a pouch, or even a sealed box from an unknown supplier hasn't gone through that process, and studios have no way to verify its cleanliness history. Reusing it risks introducing bacteria directly into an open wound.
Design Matters More Than It Seems
Externally-threaded jewellery (where the threading is on the outside of the post) drags rough threads through the piercing channel every time it's inserted or removed, damaging healing tissue. Internally threaded or push-pin jewellery is the standard for a reason.
When You Can Switch
Once your piercing is fully healed, you're generally free to switch to jewellery from anywhere you like, as long as it still meets basic safety standards (correct material, appropriate size, smooth construction). Only use studios who are happy to help with that changeover and check that a new piece is appropriate.
The Bottom Line
This policy isn't about restricting your choices — it's about making sure the metal sitting inside your body for the next several months won't cause an infection, allergic reaction, or complication. A good piercer wants your piercing to heal cleanly as much as you do.
Our recommendation is always to use an APP and/or UKAPP studio.
